The Christmas “Present”

“In every movie I watch from the ’50s

There’s only one thought that swirls

Around my head now

And that’s that everyone there on the screen

Yeah, everyone there on the screen

Well, they’re all dead now

They’re all dead now”

-Death Cab For Cutie

That’s what I try to remember about all the supposedly important or powerful people that I read about. They are gone now…barely remembered. Their names no longer familiar. Their statues falling down. Their posthumous fame already expiried not that it did them any good.

And I know the same thing is going to happen to all of us. Everything is transitory. What matters then is the present moment and not much else. What matters is being kind and loving and generous and helpful because it’s good… not because it will make us famous or wealthy or more powerful.

Memento Mori.

We are all mortal. Life is transitory and brief. It cannot be taken for granted. It can not be delayed and deferred because we long for immortality or legacy (which again, we cannot enjoy). Those “ famous people”.. they are all dead now…and some day, perhaps very soon, we will all be laid alongside them–and all our plans and pretensions and grudges will go with us.

People who live in the past are often depressed. people who worry about the future carry crippling anxiety.. Live in the present.. BE PRESENT…and give the gift of the present
